I don’t mean in terms of fashion or taste. I mean, we usually want what we want when we want it – right? So why doesn’t God allow us to live this kind of life? Because what we think is best for us sometimes means we are confusing what’s best for us with what we desire. Our selfish desires often lead to unfulfilled hopes and then we’re angry at God who didn’t give us what we wanted. He gave us freedom of choice, but knew that we would trend toward selfishness. That is not what is best for God. He created us to be part of His family for His pleasure. When we think of ourselves first and others last, we have just taken an unfortunate detour. It may be a while until we find the main road again.
