I’m sure you have been on some kind of team, whether it was in a sport or business or some other organization. What set apart the great leaders from the average ones? Was it knowledge? Was it the ability to communicate? Was it passion? Those would all be qualities to emulate. But does that define the best leader? Achieving the goal, of course, is important. But is it everything? How about helping each one on the team learn to become better person? Which is more important – knowledge or commitment? I say commitment. Not just commitment to the goal but commitment to each person on the team willing to respond with personal growth. Maybe the goal isn’t attained. That’s not as important as each person’s response to hardship and disappointments. The personal growth of each person on the team may not win the ribbon, but the real victory is the individual growth that happens within each person who learns to strive to be better. Throughout their lives, that growth is so much more important than a trophy that will one day be thrown in the trash.
